Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Christ taken down from the cross. -- This is a duplicate, with variations, of the celebrated picture belonging to the Chartreuse at Naples, and was painted for a chapel of the Valenti family at Trevi, from which it was purchased. They who are acquainted with that at Naples will perceive in this, besides a greater breadth of style and grandeur of design through the whole, a much more dignified character in the head of the virgin added to a more pleasing effect from her figure not being so much lost in the back-ground. It is needless, to say any thing of the sublimity of a composition which has been always so much admired. The freedom of this master's pencil is evident through the whole, but particularly in the angels above (Spagnolett)|Christ taken down from the cross. -- This is a duplicate, with variations, of the celebrated picture belonging to the Chartreuse at Naples, and was painted for a chapel of the Valenti family at Trevi, from which it was purchased. We shall only remark, that the canvas on which it is painted, has been prepared in the same manner with that of his famous St. John at Florence, vix. by using wax as a ground instead of size and colour, which may be one reason of its extraordinary preservation.
