  • 1828.05.02/ maison de ventes : Stanley (George). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A Village Festival; or Twelfth Night. In the centre of a large room filled with company are two men and a woman dancing to the music of a fiddler, who is elevated at the end of a projecting chimney; on the same side, but nearer the front, is a party placed round a table, among which are a jolly fellow quaffing a long glass of liquor, and a gentleman intriguing with a lady: this last circumstance seems to excite the jealousy of a man who stands on the opposite side of the room, with a glass of liquor in one hand and a jug in the other. The animated scene is enriched by a variety of accessories, particularly a beautiful spaniel, lying asleep on a cushion in front. It will be obvious that the picture is painted in the artist's early and careful manner, and that it approaches, in the richness and harmony of the tones, to the best works of Adrian Ostade.
