This grand and solemn Picture was painted for the Convent of Santa Catalina at Zaragoca, and is particularly described by Cean Bermudez (Vol. IV., 174). It was removed during the French Invasion. The celebrated picture in Magdalen College Oxford, of Christ bearing his Cross, is by this great Valentian Master. This action commenced at sun-set, in pursuance of the Admiral's signal to engage the enemy's line from van to centre. It is here represented, at the period when Sir Horatio Nelson in the vanguard (under jury masts) bore down outside of the French line, and fixed himself to the third ship, the Goliah having rounded the van ship, followed by the Zealous. In the extreme distance, on the left, is seen the Culloden on shore, on the northern shoal of the small island of Bequieres, in which position she served as a land mark to the Alexander and Swiftsure, while steering for their respective stations (W.
