The grace and modesty of the virgin are very fine, and the attitude of St. John remarkably noble. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A Venus full length, lying on a couch, naked, as big as life, with two small figures in the back ground, and a little dog lying on the white drapery of the couch, this is the same picture with some trifling alterations, as the celebrated one in the Tribune at Florence which represents the grand duke of Tuscany's mistress. Every one who has seen the Florentine Venus, and considers both the least attention, must give the preference to this for the following reasons, and makes it natural to suppose, that this which was painted for the duke of Urbino, and is mentioned by Ridolphi to have been done about the year 1543. The fine engraving by that ingenious artist Mr. Strange, which is a perfect fac-simile of the former at Florence, when compared with the present piece, sufficiently shews how much more beautiful the idea and contour of this is, and tho' TItian was never famous for correctness of drawing, yet in this figure scarcely any fault is to be found. The white drapery round the head of the Venus at Florence, is in this left out, and it must be allowed the head looks lighter for it; besides the state of preservation is much beyond the other, which has greatly suffered in its harmony of colouring from the misfortune it received, by having some boiled oil put on it some years ago, and which, tho' great judgment and attention has been used by this judicious director of the gallery, could not be taken off equally, which makes it remain very spotty.
