Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A Conversation. -- A lady habited in white satin appears to be directing another who hesitates in playing her cards; a gentleman leaning on the back of a chair is also considering the state of the game; while the gentleman who is adversary, points triumphantly to the card which he has just played. A page bearing the principal lady's train, and a black servant complete the groupe. The saloon presents a beautiful enriched cornice, ornamented with vases and figures, raised on corinthian pillars of jasper. The party is arranged with great taste, and habited in an elegant manner: the colouring rich and brilliant, and the light broad and clear. Music, dancing, drinking and their usual concomitants; a fishing party, a man drinking on horseback, attended by mine host, and a variety of stragglers form the composition. The facile pencil of Jan Steen was never more conspicuous than in the broad display made in the clouds, foreground, and free management of the trees: and for rich variety of colour, and fine keeping this may be pronounced one of his best examples (Jan Steen)|A Village Fête. -- Represented with much humour and attention to rustic amusements.
