Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The School of Athens. -- This picture affords an instance of the reverence with which one Eminent Master regarded the productions of a predecessor. The work now presented to the public, was taken by the distinguished artist, whose name is prefixed, from the Fresco painting by Raphael, still remaining as one of the most splendid Decorations of the Vatican. This performance by Poussin, is not inferior to that of Raphael, either in its composition, or in execution; excepting only that Raphael has the honor of its design. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The finished and undoubted study, for his celebrated large picture of the Martyrdom of St. Peter, which is now at the Louvre. -- This picture Count Algarotti mentions as the most finely coloured ever produced by this Illustrious Master; and so highly was it prized at Venice, that to obtain it from that City, it was covered with a Subject in Distemper, of which, an account is thus given on the reverse of the picture itself: -- "Le veritable petit tableau du grand peint par Leticien, aporté de Venize en France, par le Sr. Girard, peintre, An. 1759, Le grand tableau, ce voit a Venize, dans l'Eglise de Saint Jean et Paul, c'est le plus beau sorti de sa main, pour pouvoir le sortir de cette Ville, le canalitè, le couvrit d'un sujet a la dètrampe."
