• 1820.03.13/ maison de ventes : Sotheby's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Portrait of Shakspeare, Painted on Canvas; Size, 20 Inches by 16. This fine and extremely interesting Portrait has been in the possession of the Family of the present Proprietor for upwards of a Century, and it is now submitted to the judgment of the Connoisseur and the Admirers of our Great Poet with full confidence. When at the Country Seat of the late Mr. Douglas, at Teddington, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Mr. Garrick, and Mr. Malone, went to see it in company, and expressed the highest admiration of it. Mr. Malone soon afterwards thus mentions it in his Edition, vol.i, p.127, London, 1790: -- "About the year 1725, a Mezzotinto of Shakspeare was scraped by Simon, said to be done from an Original Picture painted by Zoust or Soest, &c. I have lately seen a Picture in the possession of Douglas, Esq. at Teddington, near Twickenham, which is, I believe, the very Picture from which Simon's Mezzotinto was made. It is on canvas, about 24 by 20* * This is the size taken with the frame, and somewhat smaller than life." It was judged necessary to have the Picture relined a short time since, which has been most carefully executed by Mr. Mortimer, of Percy Street, without, in the slightest degree, touching the Painting, which is in all its original purity (artiste anonyme)|Portrait of Shakspeare, Painted on Canvas; Size, 20 Inches by 16.
