This Work, having been exhibited to the Public some years back, is probably well known to Connoisseurs. The character it represents, the style of the performance, the place from whence it was brought at the period of the French Revolution, the recollections of the keeper of the Pictures of Fountainbleau, and the concurrent testimonies of every enlightened Critic of Art that has has examined it, place its authenticity at the work of Lionardo, and the Portrait of Francis, beyond question (Lionardo da Vinci)|Portrait of Francis the First, as St. John with the Lamb. The fore-ground is occupied with an abundance of Fruit and Vegetables, most gorgeously painted by Snyders; the Nymph Egeria, with whom Numa was supposed to hold communication, and several other Nymphs and Sylvan Figures, complete the subject. This subject having been painted more than once by Rubens, after his return from Spain, induces the belief that while in that country, and having the works of the great Spanish Painters before him, he essayed the manner of Velasquez, and produced the present Picture. Good judges are, however, of opinion, that this is a genuine Work of the Great Spanish Artist, and that Rubens, in a measure, borrowed the subject; altering some of the expressions, and giving more lively colouring, in accordance with the Flemish taste. The sobriety of colour, and depth of the tones in this example, are certainly more consonant to the Spanish character. Connoisseurs must decide (Velasquez)|The Tribute Money.
