  • 1832.07.03/ maison de ventes : Foster (Edward). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [["The Assumption of the Virgin." This subject has been treated with reference to the Holy Trinity, of which it may be said to be emblematical. In the foreground is the tomb from which the Holy Virgin has ascended; round the tomb are the twelve Apostles, in whose countenaces are expressed the various emotions indicative of their extreme joy at the blessed event; the countenance of St. John is peculiarly animated at the glory of his adopted mother. The Saviour is represented as having descended to meet the blessed Mary, who is borne and surrounded by a multitudes of the heavenly host: above, are the first and last persons of the Trinity. This extraordinary work of art is replete with beauties. As a composition alone it calls forth our warm approbation, but it must not be considered in this point of view alone; the execution surprises and delights -- the ready command of pencil, the harmony of colour, the correct and ardent expression, the perfection and beauty of the detail -- all combine to claim the attention, and rivet the connoisseur to a lengthened examination of this profound work (Plazer)|"The Assumption of the Virgin."
