  • 1835.04.11/ maison de ventes : Christie's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The Visitation. The Virgin, bending forward towards St. Elizabeth, who is kneeling before her, is taking her by the hand to raise her; behind stands Zacharias, with his hands raised. A pilgrim, grandly drawn, is reclining upon the ground: other beautiful figures are in the background, and a group of angels with flowers hover above. Extract from Lanzi, vol. i. p. 266. "Maso Manzuoli, or M. di S. Friano, a scholar of Pier Francesco di Jacopo and of Portelli, is esteemed equal to Naldini and Allori by Vasari. Nor will this appear strange to any one who beholds his Visitation, which for many years decorated S. Pier Maggiore, and was afterwards carried to Rome, where it was deposited in the gallery of the Vatican. It was painted when he was about thirty years of age; and, in the opinion of the historian, it abounds with beauty and grace in the figures, in the draperies, in the architecture, and in every other circumstance. This is his finest work, and is even among the best of that age." This splendid production is in fine preservation, and is painted upon a thick panel of white poplar; the size is 13 ft. by 8 ft. 3 in., with an arched top. The artist has signed it with his monogram, and dated it 1560 (Thomaso Manzuoli di Friano)|The Visitation.
