Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The Duke of Wellington in Consultation with his Officers, previous to a General Engagement This splendid picture -- the Chef-d'Oeuvre of the late Mr. Heaphy, containing faithful and powerful likenesses of the Duke of Wellington, and principal Officers engaged in the Peninsular war -- was painted expressly for that liberal patron of the fine arts His Late Majesty George the Fourth, for the stipulated sum of Fourteen Hundred Guineas. Mr. H. continued with the army in Spain about eighteen months, for the purpose of taking the Portraits for this great work, upon which he was employed for the space of three years after his return. The late J. Anker Smith, A.R.A. was engaged by the artist to make the well known beautiful engraving therefrom, but the engraver's death happened before the plate was completely finished occasioned a variety of untoward circumstances, and prevented Mr. H. completing this imitable performance until after the demise of his Royal and generous Employer. Upon this unhappy occurrence, Mr. H. applied to his kind and liberal patron the Duke of Wellington, but his Grace not being able to render the desired assistance, the picture remained in the possession of the artist, by whose lamented decease, this proud example of Native British Talent, and invaluable memorandum of British Heroism and Valour, is now submitted (for the benefit of his Widow and Children) to the protection of the enlightened and liberal Patrons of the Fine Arts, and the admirers of those Military Achievements, which have gained unfading laurels for the Soldier, and the highest glory for his King and Country. Finished Pictures in Water Colours and Oil.
