  • 1840.05.08/ maison de ventes : Christie's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A Storm and St. Paul's Shipwreck; this composition exhibits, in front, a number of persons, most of whom are engaged assisting the distressed, and collecting objects floating ashore from the wrecks; from hence the eye looks over a rolling ocean to some lofty rocks on the left, against which a vessel has struck, and the sea is breaking over her in heavy surges. A dark and tempestuous sky, torn by the violence of the hurricane, increases the awful grandeur of the scene. This picture is a fine example of the superior powers of Backhuyzen in this class of subjects. From the collection of Mons. Robit. See Smith's "Catalogue." • 1840.05.08/ maison de ventes : Christie's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The Holy Family, with a Group of Four Angels; the scene presents a landscape, with a portion of an edifice at the extremity of the foreground on one side, and several buildings in the distance. The Virgin, seen in nearly a front view, is seated in the centre, with the infant Saviour recumbent on her knees, embracing St. John, but looking at the same time towards his parent, who holds his leg with one hand while she extends the other to take some linen from an angel. She appears to have finished the process of ablution, as a large laver, filled with water, stands by her, and an angel, with his hand on it, is emptying water from a vase on the ground. Two other celestial infants are near them, one of whom is lifting a basket of fruit off the head of the other. St. Joseph sits very composedly at the side of the Virgin; and St. Elizabeth, in a similar position, is behind St. John. Engraved by Pesne. From the collection of the Duc de Deux Ponts, M. Robit, and Lord Radstock. See Smith's "Catalogue."
