This Picture was taken surreptitiously from the Palace of the Escurial by a military officer. It unites the beauties of Raffaelle and Corregio, and is evidently the work of a great Master (Bernardo Lovini or Luini)|A Holy Family -- canvass. This splendid effort of Wilson's powers was purchased at the sale of the late Mr. Nolleken's Pictures, into whose hands it came from Wilson's patron. It is one of his richest and most effective Pictures, and in fine preservation. Hastings, who has etched this subject, remarks with great truth, "it is difficult to conceive that landscape painting could be carried to a higher pitch of excellence." Wilson's Pictures are every where highly prized, but in the "Principality" they must bear an additional value and interest, as he was a native of that country, and one of its brightest ornaments (Richard Wilson -- Born 1714, Died 1782)|An Italian Lake Scene, with Figures -- canvass. In 1809, the last survivor of the family, Madame Knyff, sold it to a French Dealer, from whom the late owner purchased it. The Landscape and Flowers are painted by Breughel, with great skill and knowledge of his art. Their beauty gives additional effect to the vivid and powerful colouring of the Figures. This Picture may be truly said to have been painted con. amore (Peter Paul Rubens)|A Lady and Child, in a Landscape, enriched with Flowers -- panel. A genuine and beautiful Picture, in the finest style of the Master; it bears the date of 1675, with the original signature of Wynants, who the biographers state to have died in 1670. In Smith's Catalogue Raisonné of the works of this able Master, part 6, page 227, is the following remark, which shows that this Picture is correctly dated: -- "Biographers are mistaken in stating his death to have occurred in 1670, for the writer has seen Pictures by his hand dated 1673. A Dutch Dictionary of Painters, published in 1816, says he died in 1677."
