An excellent composition in the style of Teniers, and little inferior to that great artist, it is even reported that by seeing his disciple produce this great composition, that Teniers was so affected with jealousy, that he advis'd him to turn his pencil to portrait painting, which he afterwards pursued, and in which he made so extraordinary a progress by his own diligence and his masters recommendation, that many of his performances, pass for the works of Gonzalis. The painter has introduc'd himself and family in the front of the piece. This delicate and affecting part is finely contrasted by the hurried action and violence of the ravishers, who are hasting with the beautiful prize, and seem to dread a pursuit. Dechamp's, the author of the lives of the painters, gives the highest encomiums on the extraordinary genius of this master, both for colouring, drawing, expression and composition; and the piece before us verifies every commendation he has bestowed on him, and would be sufficient to immortalize the memory of the artist, and confirm us that he might be a competitor of the great Vandyke (L.
