  • 1778.03.07/ maison de ventes : Christie's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Mars destroying the arts and sciences, is prevented by Venus, a finished model for the great picture in the Florentine collection Extract from a Letter wrote by Rubens to Signior Giusto, the Superintendant of the Palace of the great Duke of Tuscany, dated Antwerp, 12th of March, 1638, when the great Picutre (of which the above Lot 82 is the Model) was sent to Florence. "The principal Figure is Mars, who leaving the Temple of Janus open, seems by his Helmet and Sword stain'd with Blood to threaten Mankind with some great Evil: he is regardless of Venus, who endeavours by her Caresses and Blandishments to restrain him: she is accompanied by Love and Pleasure. On the other Side mars is drawn by the Fury, Alletto, holding a burning Torch, two Monsters being near that represent Sickness and Famine, the inseparable Attendants of War. On the Ground lies a female Figure with a Lute broken, that denotes Harmony, which is incompatible with the Discord of War; as also a Matron with a Child in her Arms, shewing that Fertility, Population, and Charity are obstructed by it. There is moreover, an Architect lying prostrate with the Emblems of his Profession, which signifies that the Buildings raised in Time of Peace for the Convenience and Ornament of Cities, are ruined by the Violence of Arms. You will also observe a Book and Designs under the Feet of Mars, which infer that the Belles Lettres and fine Arts are destroyed in Time of War. The Bundle of Darts, with the String that bound them together, is loosed, which united is an Emblem of Concord. The Caduceus is the Symbol of Peace, but is here thrown asid. Lastly, the Matron dressed in Black, and seen lamenting, with her Veil blown aside, and stripped of her Jewels and other Ornaments, is the unhappy Europe, which has suffered Rapine, Devastation and Misery. Her characteristic Attendant is an Angel or Genius with an Orb and Cross at top, to denote the christian World."
