  • 1795.12.-/ maison de ventes : Pawson (Samuel). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Birth of Venus. This great artist has, in this sublime picture, manifested the force of his genius both in the invention and execution. This, his Venus anadiomene, exhibits a most perfect model of unattired, untutored beauty, on her sense of emergency into existence, which is to discover her face. In the three Graces, the appearance of each is poetically imagined; one resenting dress, herself in naked modesty, almost conceals her face; another extending a wreath of flowers to the Goddess, shows a joyous haste to please; the third, holding a mirror, with her face in full, indicates her own alacrity for the being seen. Of Leonardo da Vinci, it is sufficient, with his name, just to mention his being born in Tuscany 1445, and died in the arms of Francis the 1st. at Fontainbleau, aged 73. The one of these pieces has for subject some goat herds guarding their flocks: the other, shepherds; wherein is introduced Christ with his disciples at Emaus. It is on a just presumption of its being scarce possible that any artist, or real connoisseur can refuse his assent to the authenticity of the ascription of these paintings to Paul Brill, especially, or deny the right of their being ranked among his capital performances, that a reflection here very naturally occurs, for the precautioning once for all against that spirit of mistrust, from which some, in the feat of being imposed upon by others, imponse on themselves. The very same, or nearly similar objects, appear in paintings, by the same artist, in the Luxembourg-palace, and also in the cabinet of Mons. Le Noir. But duplicates and triplicates, by the same artist, are not copies. A superficial examiner or pretended connoisseur, who, from having seen two pictures of an old woman reading, both perhaps by some modern Rembrandt, immediately conclude themselves authorised to suspect every duplicate of the like imposition, surely over-shoots his mark. It is knowing very little of paintings, not to know what is so very common and so very natural, that where an artist shall have produced a performance stamped with genius, and recommendable for its excellence, he is or excited by his own consideration, or by the desire of others to repeat it. He does so, evidently without imposition, and oftenest for the better, the last production contains some new and valuable originality. Berghem was born at Harlem in 1624, and died there aged 59. This painter, who nearly attained to universal excellence, having great elegance in his choice, and happiness of composition, was particularly estimable; for that notwithstanding his freedom of design in general, his bold grouping, and great masses of light and shade, seem, at first view, to indicate a hasty execution, yet, not the minutest object in his pieces will be found to discover any negligence: on the contrary, a stone, a plant are observed to be in equal accuracy and perfection with his principal figure. These pieces were in the cabinet of Mons. Julienne, and last of the Abbot Peroux. Price 500l. (Van Berghem)|Two Landschapes with Cattle in his best time and manner. The air of tenderness expressed in the figure and looks of the Angel, as he is extracting the barb, greatly adds to the pathos of the martyred Saint, the shock of whose agony is, with great art and propriety, much softened by the painter's throwing the upper part of his figure into shade. The extacy of fervour in the Saint, the figures exquisitely well executed of the two angels, which animate and contrast the dreariness of the scene in the cavern, corroborate much the idea, that this capital artist, as well as others of his own countrymen greatly added to the effect of their art, by calling in to its aid the sister-art of poetry, with all its imagery, and powers of creation. It was the property of this Bishop of Lizieux, and last of the Abbot of Peroux. On occasion of this picture, it may not be impertinent to offer one consideration of the difference of the costume at different periods of time, in the representation of the same subject. The two last pictures (No. 4 and 5) were painted by men of the highest reputation in their respective days, at little more than a century's distance. Raphael has, with superior propriety, preserved to the Virgin, especially the local and natural simplicity of dress and situation in life. Vandyke has bestowed more of elegance, more of modern refinement. Both are master-pieces. Vandyke, born at Antwerp in 1599, died at London, aged 42. Price 500l. (Vandyke)|The Virgin and Child. The spectator will readily remark the judicious distribution by the artist, of the pious offices of the Virgin Mary and St. John, in that distinction of character, between maternal affection, and reverential concern, which is finely preserved. Here, of Reubens (born at Cologne 1577, and died at Antwerp, aged 63) relatively to this picture, it is observable that it was the last cabinet picture that he finished in 1620, having afterwards been constantly employed in large works.
