  • 1799.03.09/ maison de ventes : Phillips (Harry). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Sion house, seen from Richmond gardens. Though this artist is daily rising in fame, there are but a few who are fully alive to his merits. The time, however, is not very far distant, when his best works will become, as scarce and as eagerly sought after, as those of any landscape painter that ever lived; and there are very few, even of these, which for warmth and harmony of tone, for keeping, distance, depth, aerial perspective, calm repose, and exquisitive unity are more fascinating than the pictue now before the public (Wilson)|Sion house, seen from Richmond gardens. The instances in which any painter, whatever, has exhibited characters equal to these, are very rare. The resigned unaffected piety of St. Francis, the fortitude and dignity of the Madona, and the power and capacity of the Child, so happily combined with infantine playfulness, are surely sublime efforts of human genius (Parmegiano)|Madona child and St. Francis. • 1799.03.09/ maison de ventes : Phillips (Harry). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A corps du Garde. Another fine picture of the master;....The relief uncommonly bold, and the deception so enchanting, that the spectator, imagines he could seat himself in the saddle, put on the armour, and beat the drum. The distance and depth of the card-players in the back chamber, and the soft light descending down the wall to the floor, as well as the pleasing figure of the young officer, are all charming effects of the same captivating hand (Teniers)|A corps du Garde. The kingdom contains but few pictures so highly finished, finely drawn, but beautifully coloured, as the one here offered to sale. The price of the artist for each picture, as we are informed by Sandrart, was eight thousand florins; and the present piece, though painted almost two hundred years ago, appears as it had been just taken from the easel (Rottenhammer)|Minerva and Nymphs, in musical groups and conversation. • 1799.03.09/ maison de ventes : Phillips (Harry). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Landscape. The very peculiar estimation, in which the pictures of this master are held, is well known. Many bad copies and damaged originals are brought to market, but a real picture in such excellent preservation, of so verdant a tint, and so fresh and charming to the eye, is seldom to be purchased. The fore-ground and bleaching meadows, the brightness of the distant horizon, and the relief of the floating clouds are beauties conspicuous to every eye (Ruysdael)|Landscape. The space included by the eye gives boldness and magnitude. The aerial perspective is peculiarly fine; and the figures, buildings, river, sea, and distant promontory, all managed with the utmost dexterity and knowledge of the art, produce a most captivating effect (Vandermeer)|This is a landscape taken from a height, and the effect is very delightful. • 1799.03.09/ maison de ventes : Phillips (Harry). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Angelica and Medora. This picture was brought from Italy by a family that may be referred to; and the money paid for it was five hundred pounds; which comparing it in worth and price to other famous pictures, was certainly a very moderate sum. The account there given of it was, that it was begun by Titian, and finished by Guido; and, though the latter was born only two years before the death of the former, the picture bears internal proofs of the strong probability that the story is true. The costume and smallness of the head, the drawing, and the carnation tints, are testimonies that induce us to exclaim, Aut Titianus -- aut Diabolus! If so, the landscape, back-ground, and drapery, belong to another hand. But, be it as it may, the keeping is so perfect, the relief so prominent, and the colouring so exquisite, that there are few pictures existing which are in these respects its equal. In the first collection in the world, these beauties would rank it in the first class (Titian)|Angelica and Medora. • 1799.03.09/ maison de ventes : Phillips (Harry). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A carousal. The connoisseur, who examines this picture, will probably be astonished that he has never before heard a painter's name, who could at once display so much knowledge and execution in his art, and was capable of exhibiting such variety of character. In the Künstler's lexicon, page 3, Zürich, 1763, we are informed, that Ascanius, a Dutchman, painted three pictures, exhibiting the ceremonies observed in initiating a member of the Bentvogel society at Rome, (of which this now offered to sale is one) and that they were engraved by Mathias Poole, at Amsterdam (Ascanius)|A carousal.
