This is, perhaps, one of the best historical Pictures he ever painted; the Drawing is excellent, and the back Ground is managed with wonderful Art: it was probably painted soon after his Return from Venice, when his mind was full of the ideas of the Venetian and Lombard Schools (Van Dyck)|The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian, shot to Death with Arrows, and two Angels grieving, and assisting him. This Picture was in the Arundell collection, inherited by Lady Betty Germaine, who left it in her Will to the present Proprietor (Leonardo da Vinci)|A Laughing Boy with a Plaything in his Hand.
