  • 1810.06.09/ maison de ventes : Willson (Thomas). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Moses striking the Rock. It is impossible to point out which is the most admirable part of this picture, its beauties are so numerous; and if we were to analyse it, it would then be difficult for us to decide to which of them we should give the preference. N.B. This picture is mentioned in the Entretien sur les Vies et sur les OEuvrages des plus excellens Peintres, par Felibien, who speaking of the Works of Poussin makes the following observation. "This excellent picture wherein Moses is represented striking the Rock, was painted for M. de Gillier, and after having adorned the Cabinets of M. de Lisle Saudier, of the President de Bellievre, and Mons. Dreux, it is at this time one of the most celebrated pictures among those of Mons. le Marquis de Seignelay." After this it was brought to England, and remained upwards of 80 Years in the place from whence its present possessor purchased it, and it has never before been offered for sale (N.
