Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The Feast of the Passover, or the Last Supper, of our Lord Jesus Christ, with the Twelve Apostles; sublime composition of that immortal artist, Leonardo da Vinci; painted about the year 1500...is a wonderful conception which took birth in the philosophic mind of that great artist, Leonardo da Vinci; a double offering, of which one originated in piety and devotion, and was painted on the walls of a convent, the Madonna delle Grazie in Milan; the other, now before us, was most probably that of gratitude from the artist to his illustrious and royal patron, Francis the First, king of France...This most elaborate and ancient painting in oil colours on canvas...is an exact repetition, with the exception of a few alterations in the minor or accessory parts of the picture, but which when done by the artist himself, constitute it a second original; it...was for a time considered as a most beautiful copy only, done by Mark d'Oggionno...Many writers and eminent artists have however formed a more advantageous opinion of the picture before us. It had been long in the possession of the Carthusians in their convent at Pavia, when on the suppression of that order and the sale of their effects in 1793, it became the property of a citizen of Milan, the actual owner of it...In the first place, we adduce as of weighty authority, the decisive assertion of Lanzi, "that it ably supplies the loss of the original." We find that so far back as the year 1671, the painter Santagostini thus expresses himself: "This repetition of the Lord's Last Supper, done by Marco da Oggionno, after Leonardo da Vinci, is equally as beautiful as the original"...The reverend A. Guillon, in an interesting historical essay on this picture, points out in every part of it, the masterly touches of originality; and with historical proofs sustains that it was painted for Francis I. of France The preceding was excerpted (Leonardo da Vinci)|The Feast of the Passover, or the Last Supper, of our Lord Jesus Christ, with the Twelve Apostles; sublime composition of that immortal artist, Leonardo da Vinci; painted about the year 1500...is a wonderful conception which took birth in the philosophic mind of that great artist, Leonardo da Vinci; a double offering, of which one originated in piety and devotion, and was painted on the walls of a convent, the Madonna delle Grazie in Milan; the other, now before us, was most probably that of gratitude from the artist to his illustrious and royal patron, Francis the First, king of France...This most elaborate and ancient painting in oil colours on canvas...is an exact repetition, with the exception of a few alterations in the minor or accessory parts of the picture, but which when done by the artist himself, constitute it a second original; it...was for a time considered as a most beautiful copy only, done by Mark d'Oggionno...Many writers and eminent artists have however formed a more advantageous opinion of the picture before us.
