  • 1818.11.10/ maison de ventes : Dyson (Samuel). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The Butcher's Shop. This picture was formerly at Bermondsey Spa, and, together with the companion pictures, (the Fishmonger's, Poulterer's, and Vegetable Shops,) attracted, in no inconsiderable degree, the public attention: for complete deception, as a work of art, it is presumed to have no competitor; and since it has been exhibited in this gallery, many visitors have returned home expressing their astonishment that a butcher's shop should be in such a situation; others have slightly glanced at the picture without entering the room, having presumed it was the larder appertaining to the family. It is seen to greatest advantage when a strong light is on the room, and at about fifteen or twenty foot distance. The following lines are extracted from a pamphlet distributed at the Spa: -- And now gentle friends, I entreat you to stop, And view with attention the fam'd butcher's shop, So justly admired by the grave and the gay, That you will approve it, I'll venture to say: If you saw it at market, I have not a doubt, You'd think it a shop, and the meat hannging out. The mutton and beef, are, indeed, mighty clever, And so is the sweetbread, the lights, and the liver. More wonderful yet, there's of lamb a hind quarter Will astonish you much, if not make your mouth water. On the stall there's a buttock would fill a large dish, As fat and as fine as your fancy can wish. In short, the whole shop is so charmingly fill'd With all kinds of meat very nice and fresh kill'd, That, without any joking, there cannot be found It's fellow for plenty untainted and sound. There's a dog underneath, so don't venture too nigh, For mastiff's, you know, at strange people will fly (Keyse)|The Butcher's Shop.
