This fine Picture was purchased from a Family in whose possession it had remained from the time of the Master. It is well known that this great Painter had many Pupils of first-rate talents, who copied his Works, which were afterwards retouched with his masterly Pencil, and infused in them the magic excellencies of his own works. This noble Picture is stamped with these characteristic marks, in its splendour of Colour and freedom of Pencil (Rubens)|The Holy Family, a grand Gallery Picture. It was brought from Parma; and Lady Hamilton asserted that it was the celebrated Picture of this Master at Colona, and has been valued at £20,000 (Correggio)|The Discovery of Calisto. This extraordinary fine Picture was taken in a Vessel bound to a French Port, by an English Ship of War, and was intended for Buonaparte's private Collection.
