In the works of this Artist, Poelemburg, Both, and other of the best Flemish Artists who studied in Italy, there is an elevated style in the selection, as well as the arrangement of their works; and however much of the Flemish gusto they might carry along with them, they returned at least purified from its noxious influence, and with classical ideas, imbibed from the beautiful scites of Tivoli, Frescati, &c. This pleasing and fine picture has been called the work of Titian, probably from the great resemblance which it bears to this great Master's colouring; but there is no doubt that it is the production of Bassano, painted in his second style, which much resembles that of Titian, whom he very closely studied and copied. It is, however, a proof of its great merit (Jacopo da Ponte, called Il Bassano)|The Last Supper. 2 ft. 6 in. -- 1 ft. 10 in. h. The Artist seems to have been animated in an uncommon degree with his subject; which it is probable he had often witnessed, for the animals are delineated with amazing truth and spirit, and with a vigour of pencil bordering almost upon the extravagant: yet there is a great deal of fire and grandeur in the composition; and the savage energy of the dogs, in rushing, void of fear, upon almost certain destraction -- the mingled feelings of horror and affright, excited by the mutilated state of the wounded animals -- and the almost unconquerable fierceness of the boar, standing erect, in the midst of his numerous assailants, are most inimitably pourtrayed, and, altogether, present a scene, which the powers of this Artist have done ample justice to, and which even Rubens, or Snyders, could not have surpassed.
