The subject of this picture is a most painful one, but it must be observed that the artist has most ingeniously covered that part of the design which is calculated to create emotions of an unpleasant nature; he has consulted nature and finely blended it with art; the masses of shade are transparent; the colouring is clear and true, and at the same time sufficiently vigourous to give all the relief that is required. It is a true and admirable picture, and worthy to be ranked in the first collection of any country (Michael Angelo di Carravaggio)|Salome carrying the Head of St. John the Baptist.
