  • 1831.07.22/ maison de ventes : Sotheby's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[View in Italy. In the foreground is a winding road, in which is seen a Peasant mounted on a Mule approaching a Man and Woman who are reposing on the steps near an entrance of a house surrounded by walls; to the right is a sheet of water, in which the sky is cleverly reflected; in the centre is a dove cote. This is a most ingeniously painted production, as, indeed, are all the genuine pictures of this talented artist: the keeping and its general harmony are excellent, and though the subject appears to be scarcely any thing but what is painted every day, yet that little is so managed as to leave the eye nothing to wish for (John Both)|View in Italy. • 1831.07.22/ maison de ventes : Sotheby's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Salome carrying the Head of St. John the Baptist. The subject of this picture is a most painful one, but it must be observed that the artist has most ingeniously covered that part of the design which is calculated to create emotions of an unpleasant nature; he has consulted nature and finely blended it with art; the masses of shade are transparent; the colouring is clear and true, and at the same time sufficiently vigourous to give all the relief that is required. It is a true and admirable picture, and worthy to be ranked in the first collection of any country (Michael Angelo di Carravaggio)|Salome carrying the Head of St. John the Baptist.
