Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[View on the Rhine -- The River is studded with a variety of boats; on the left on an eminence is the castle of Ebreinolien, overlooking a vast tract of highly cultivated country entiched with vineyards and chateaus. This artist was so fond of the water, that he bought the hull of an old ship, and fitted it up as a residence, moving from place to place, as fancy or his desire to study the features of some new aquatic scenery directed. In one of these eccentric excursions, it is more than probable, the present view was taken. The subjects generally painted by him were Italian Ruins, and Views on the Rhine which he executed with great neatness in the colouring; enlivening his landscapes with elegant small figures and cattle, with boats and other vessels, well designed and correctly drawn. He had an uncommon command of pencil, which enabled him to adapt it to the style of several distinguished masters (John Griffier)|View on the Rhine -- The River is studded with a variety of boats; on the left on an eminence is the castle of Ebreinolien, overlooking a vast tract of highly cultivated country entiched with vineyards and chateaus.
