Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The Royal Cockpit, containing about twenty portraits of the principal Nobility in the time of Charles the First, including the Earls of Pembroke, Holland, Dorset, Essex, Bristol, &c. also Tom Killigrew the Jester, all of whom are actively engaged in betting on a pending match which is vigorously represented, the whole scene depicted with the most lively effect, the drawing and colouring of which clearly indicates it to be from the powerful pencil of Vandyke. The inscription on the tomb of this accomplished young nobleman, runs thus. "He was Servant to Queen Elizabeth, Counsellor to King James, and Friend to Sir Philip Sidney." Lord Brooke came to an untimely end, having been assassinated by his own servant. This portrait, which is unquestionably from the pencil of Zucchero, was formerly in the Collection of Lord de Tabley (Zucchero)|Sir Philip Sidney. "AEtatis Suae 17. The above nobleman was one of the principal parliamentary leaders, and the last Master of the Court of Wards; afterwards privy seal to Charles the Second: according to the prudent maxim of that prince, who chose to "caress his foes and trust his friends." He died in 1662 (artiste anonyme)|Fiennes William, Viscount Say and Seale, in slashed black dress; and his Lady, in black dress and white ruff.
