  • 1833.06.07/ maison de ventes : Foster (Edward). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A Marine View, with the Italian Coast and Lighthouse, on the summit of high Cliffs; the time near sun-set, with the approach of a Storm; a Man-of-War in the offing; the Waves breaking on the Shore, where a number of Fishermen are hauling in a Boat. Vernet had the peculiar art of giving reality and life to every thing he touched with his pencil; the natural action of the figures, the curling waves, and dashing spray, and the rapidly floating sky, are all illustrative of his power. This Work is in fine preservation, and may safely be pronounced a chef-d'oeuvre. The torrent of Rain pouring forth from the surcharged Clouds oblige some Peasants to seek shelter in an adjoining Wood; the Sun darts its rays in a distant Country, and the verdure and foliage shew the Autumnal Season.
