  • 1835.07.18/ maison de ventes : Phillips (Harry). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The Emperor Charles V. attended by German, Spanish, and Italian Princes and Nobles, receiving deputies from Asia, Africa, and America. In the background are detached groups, showing the various costumes of the different nations of the earth. A highly interesting picture, painted with extreme care, and although of a Gothic character, possessing great beauty of colour. The figures behind the Emperor are all evidently portraits, but their names are not known. The curious antiquary might probably discover many of them by the dresses, and by the heraldic bearings depicted upon them (Holbein)|The Emperor Charles V. attended by German, Spanish, and Italian Princes and Nobles, receiving deputies from Asia, Africa, and America. • 1835.07.18/ maison de ventes : Phillips (Harry). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Entombment of Christ. This noble work appears to have been painted after Titian returned from Rome, for the figure of Christ is conceived and drawn in the great style of M. Angelo. It is a picture almost without colouring, and deriving infinite grandeur from the deep, low tone which pervades it, like the interior of a cavern, the only light of which was from a low entrance. The characters and expressions are very fine (Titian)|Entombment of Christ. This is a Portrait of Annetta Van Gowen, the wife of Jan Stein, painted before their marriage; she appears here a perfect Flemish beauty; the expression is very delightful; it is evident she is playing an air of a comic character, and that she is well pleased with her performance (Jan Stein)|Girl Playing on the Guitar.
