In the centre of the room, an old man, bearing in his face evident traces of the effects of the wine he has just left, is leading a female out to dance, which he does so comically as to excite the laughter of several of the revellers at the table, while a fiddler standing on a stool is encouraging them by the sound of the violin. The open window looks on to a common, where a tent and crowds of merrymakers indicate that the fair is proceeding with spirit. Every group in this picture appears to have its separate amusement, and the individuality of character, and appearance of unrestrained enjoyment which the artist has diffused through every countenance, cannot be too highly commended.
