  • 1842.04.23/ maison de ventes : Christie's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A Landscape and Figures. On the left, a mass of trees is opposed to an effect of sunshine, which illumines the middle and lower parts of the landscape. Two pastoral figures are seated on the foreground, unconscious of the gatherine storm which the sky on the right hand side of the picture seems to portend. The middle ground is occupied by Italian buildings, which form a promontory in the landscape;p the centre of which is traversed by a river, issuing from a lake that is seen in the distance. A Shepherd is leading his cattle along a path that runs between the bold and broken foreground, and these buildings; probably the site of some ancient Roman Villa. A grand composition. • 1842.04.23/ maison de ventes : Christie's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[The Procession of the Whte Horse, the annual tribute to the Pope, by which the King of Naples holds his Crown from the Head of the Catholic Church. In the foreground a page is leading the White Horse, alongside of which an Ecclesiastic is carrying an emblem of the Holy Cross. Three Cardinals follow, mounted on horses fully caparisoned, and who precede another Cardinal carried in a sedan chair, who bestows benedictions on the multitude. This personage again is followed by a coach drawn by six white horses, finely foreshortened -- in this coach the Royal Tributary is seated. On the right of the picture, the eye is attracted to a female with a red bonnet mounted on a mule, in advance of whom are two Officials of the Court. On the opposite side, and to balance this effect of light, a Pilgrim is seated on the steps of a stair, behind whom stand an Armenian Jew and a young man holding a Greyhound in leash. The other figures in this part of the picture are introduced with propriety and excellent effect. The scene is laid at a bridge over the Tyber, with the Castle of St. Angelo in the distance. (J.
