Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A farm yard, and an old man and others eating; a boy standing by, with a hare hanging to a stick, over his shoulders, as if he came from coursing; painted with great spirit, sharply touch'd in his fine manner This picture is a proof of the truth of what is said in the life of Teniers, that he cou'd metamorphose himself and assume every shape. The present piece being so much in the style of Jacomo Bassan, that it might deceive the Connoisseurs, and pass for that master (Teniers)|A farm yard, and an old man and others eating; a boy standing by, with a hare hanging to a stick, over his shoulders, as if he came from coursing; painted with great spirit, sharply touch'd in his fine manner This picture is a proof of the truth of what is said in the life of Teniers, that he cou'd metamorphose himself and assume every shape. • 1773.04.06/ maison de ventes : Christie's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A large picture, representing a most jovial merry-making, of the inhabitants of a country village, feasting and dancing. An excellent composition in the style of Teniers, and little inferior to that great artist, it is even reported that by seeing his disciple produce this great composition, that Teniers was so affected with jealousy, that he advis'd him to turn his pencil to portrait painting, which he afterwards pursued, and in which he made so extraordinary a progress by his own diligence and his masters recommendation, that many of his performances, pass for the works of Gonzalis. The painter has introduc'd himself and family in the front of the piece. • 1773.04.06/ maison de ventes : Christie's. Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[This grand composition, represents the rape of Helen, and is as admirable for the fine contrasts of the grouping, as for the lustre of colouring, and gradation and variety of the tints; the eye falls directly on the centre of the piece, where the most interesting passage is shewn, and where a most beautiful countenance is disturbed with grief, distress, and anger. This delicate and affecting part is finely contrasted by the hurried action and violence of the ravishers, who are hasting with the beautiful prize, and seem to dread a pursuit. Dechamp's, the author of the lives of the painters, gives the highest encomiums on the extraordinary genius of this master, both for colouring, drawing, expression and composition; and the piece before us verifies every commendation he has bestowed on him, and would be sufficient to immortalize the memory of the artist, and confirm us that he might be a competitor of the great Vandyke (L. Deyster)|This grand composition, represents the rape of Helen, and is as admirable for the fine contrasts of the grouping, as for the lustre of colouring, and gradation and variety of the tints; the eye falls directly on the centre of the piece, where the most interesting passage is shewn, and where a most beautiful countenance is disturbed with grief, distress, and anger.
