  • 1837.05.31/ maison de ventes : Foster (Edward). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A Fête Champêtre. The Surpirze -- Two lovers, who have retired into a bower formed by a turn in the walk of a garden, are surprized by a party of ladies and gentlemen, who appear fully to enjoy the discomfiture of the lovers, who are deprecating their jokes. One of the party, in the privileged garb of Harlequin, seems to be foremost; they are led on by Hymen, and assisted by Cupid -- the allegory of which is well told. In this and the following picture, Dietricy, who was celebrated for his happy talent of imitating the style of other great masters, has blended with surprizing tact the delicacy and elegance of Watteau with his own force of colouring. • 1837.05.31/ maison de ventes : Foster (Edward). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[A Fête Champêtre. The companion picture. On a stone bench in a garden, surrounded by elegant shrubs and trees, and beneath a statue of Minerva, a young mother of a family is seated with her infant on her lap, and an older child reclining at her feet. The gentleman behind her resting his arm on the pedestal of the statue, with a smile on his countenance, appears to be her husband. These four figures form a group of peculier elegance. Some of the guests have arrayed themselves in the motley characters of a harlequinade; one of whom, in the dress of Pantaloon, is endeavouring to practice some little deception on the lady of the house, while another is amusing the remainder by sustaining the character of the Harlequin. • 1837.05.31/ maison de ventes : Foster (Edward). Vente de l'œuvre décrite comme [[Fair Time at a Dutch Hostelry. In a spacious and lofty apartment is a long table spread for a repast, with a party enjoying themselves. In the centre of the room, an old man, bearing in his face evident traces of the effects of the wine he has just left, is leading a female out to dance, which he does so comically as to excite the laughter of several of the revellers at the table, while a fiddler standing on a stool is encouraging them by the sound of the violin. The open window looks on to a common, where a tent and crowds of merrymakers indicate that the fair is proceeding with spirit. Every group in this picture appears to have its separate amusement, and the individuality of character, and appearance of unrestrained enjoyment which the artist has diffused through every countenance, cannot be too highly commended.
